Invasive round goby shows higher sensitivity to salinization than native European perch

چکیده
Salinity is an influential abiotic environmental factor in aquatic species, specifically freshwater, where salinization causes ecosystem degradation. Secondary salinization, that increases salinity due to anthropogenic activities, can affect both osmoregulation and behaviour freshwater fishes. It generally believed invasive species handle climatic change degradation better than native which one reason for their invasion success. However, how cope with changes remains little understood. Therefore, we investigated low (500 µS/cm) high (2000 conditions affected oxygen consumption the round goby ( Neogobius melanostomus ) European perch Perca fluviatilis ). Our results showed increased swimming non-swimming movements changed response increments, whereas was not by salinity. Thus, it seems as if more sensitive perch. fit minority of studies indicating being less tolerant some changes. This finding could be explained adaptation its long establishment River Rhine. Further, our are also confirming effect species-specific. In addition, show diametrically different behavioural disturbance holding ecological niches well anatomical differences.

The Invasive Wetland Plant Alternanthera philoxeroides Shows a Higher Tolerance to Waterlogging than Its Native Congener Alternanthera sessilis
Plant invasion is one of the major threats to natural ecosystems. Phenotypic plasticity is considered to be important for promoting plant invasiveness. High tolerance of stress can also increase survival of invasive plants in adverse habitats. Limited growth and conservation of carbohydrate are considered to increase tolerance of flooding in plants. However, few studies have examined whether in...

The Ponto-Caspian round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) was introduced to the Gulf of Gdańsk, southern Baltic Sea, in the late 1980s, and it has now become the dominant demersal fish species in shallow water. This study aimed to assess diet preferences and the degree of diet overlap between the round goby and the native flounder (Platichthys flesus). Results from time-series of stomach contents a...
متن کاملGetting What Is Served? Feeding Ecology Influencing Parasite-Host Interactions in Invasive Round Goby Neogobius melanostomus
Freshwater ecosystems are increasingly impacted by alien invasive species which have the potential to alter various ecological interactions like predator-prey and host-parasite relationships. Here, we simultaneously examined predator-prey interactions and parasitization patterns of the highly invasive round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) in the rivers Rhine and Main in Germany. A total of 350 N....
متن کاملLittle association of biological trait values with environmental variables in invasive alien round goby (Neogobius melanostomus)
The relative importance of species-specific biological trait characteristics and environmental factors in invasions of nonindigenous species remains controversial because both have mostly been studied independently. Thus, the main objective of this study was to examine the correlation of biological traits with environmental variation in the globally invasive round goby Neogobius melanostomus fr...
